Do you and your family know what to do in the event of a fire or tornado? Do you have an emergency plan, a safe and designated meeting place once you’ve gotten out of your house? Do you have a disaster supply kit? What about having a pet disaster supply kit for your pets, if you have any. These are just a few of the topics discussed on the most recent episode of Eye on Oshkosh. During the hour, host Cheryl Hentz talks with Winnebago County Emergency Management Director Linda Kollmann and Becky Tiles, Volunteer Partner with the Senior Disaster Program Manager for Wisconsin Red Cross about the various things people should think about as they prepare for severe storms, chemical spills, or some other disaster from which they need to seek shelter or evacuate from their home.
There are lots of great websites given during the show, so have a pen/pencil and paper handy to jot them down. One is a website where you can sign up for free smoke alarms for your home through the American Red Cross, and the Red Cross will even install them for you ( GetASmokeAlarm.org ). They’ll also tell you what kinds of things you should include in a disaster supply kit, how to get a copy of the latest Winnebago County Residential Guide to Emergency Preparedness, the need to a weather radio and/or weather app for your smartphone, and how you can register for cell phone (and/or landline) to receive local emergency notifications when something happens here in Winnebago County.
Our deepest thanks to Linda Kollmann and others in Winnebago County (and Oshkosh) who work to keep us safe during times of emergencies; and to Becky and everyone at the American and Wisconsin Red Cross for ALL they do!! This is one show you DON’T want to miss!! It can be seen here or by going to this link: https://youtu.be/wOTeOcuH6FY.
** As a side note, the Red Cross is able to do much of what they do free of charge because of financial donations from others. If you would like to make a donation, go to RedCross.org. They ALWAYS need help to continue doing what they do.
